Hello from America!! 　所変わればトイレも変わる?

こんにちは  メアリーです。今日の Mary'sCafe のゲストは、アメリカのAdamさんです。

In America, one of the things that Japan is most well known for are high-tech toilets.  So it comes to know surprise that when I first came to Japan in the summer of 2009 that I expected God-like toilets to be everywhere.  Unfortunately, I had a rude awakening one-day in a train station two weeks after I arrived in Japan.  As I don’t like seafood, most of Japanese cuisine was off limits to me.  So I ate mostly quick-eat meals such as Cup of Noodles.  My stomach of course did not take this abuse well so one day my stomach decided to let me have it.  I was on a station platform waiting for a train when the feeling came, and I had to go.  I preceded to the restroom and when I entered a stall all that I saw was this whole in the ground. I thought to myself “hey someone stole the toilet”.  So I checked the next one and it was the same thing.  After analyzing this hole in the ground and eventually figuring out what it was I was completely baffled.  I had no clue how to use such a toilet.  I didn’t even know which way to face.  As nature was calling furiously I left the station and found one of those high-tech toilets in a near by shopping mall.  I learned a lesson very quick and that is to always make “preparations” before traveling on trains in Japan, as most Japanese stations don’t have Western toilets.

3０年近くi前のことを思い出しました。我が家でホームパーテーをやっていた時のこと。色んな国籍の友達たちとワイワイやっていたら、突然トイレの方から悲鳴が・・・ 　私：「トイレで水浴びでもしたの？」　男性：「ボタンがいっぱいあるから、色々押してたら、ノズルが出てきて顔面噴射をくらったよ！」その人は、アメリカ人で結構なシテｲーボーイだったのですが、それでも「日本のハイテクはすごい！」と、トイレで予期せぬ攻撃を受けたにもかかわらず、怒るよりも感動していました。外国に行くと、文化や習慣の違いに感動したりびっくりしたりすることが多いですが、私自身の体験や人から聞いたことのびっくりエピソードの中には、トイレにまつわることもたくさんあります。「きゃー　ドアがない～」「ここの人たちはトイレットペーパーを使わないらしい?? 」「ペーパーはあるけど、水に流してはいけない?? 」・・・ そもそもトイレそのものがない所だってあります。今回登場のAdam さんは、日本のハイテクトイレではなく、逆に和式トイレとの初対面にビックリ!! だったようですが、私も以前 「ねえメアリ－ 変なこと聞くんだけど、和式トイレって、どっちを向いて座ればいいの？」　って聞かれたことありますよ。日本人の皆さんには 「ハア？」って質問でしょうけどね。
